The Damage Control Bundle
I don’t know about you, but one of my biggest challenges when it comes to Christmas is handling all of the parties and drinking.
I don’t want to lose the progress I’ve made all year, but also don’t want to be a ‘stick in the mud’ at parties.
I also hate the idea of just letting it all go and starting again in the new year – that’s not sensible.
I firmly believe that we all deserve to have fun (life is for living), so sitting back and not having a little indulgence, doesn’t quite cut it for me, let alone the social pressure from friends that we get when we’re trying to be good.
The problem for me is I probably know a little too much when it comes to stress, alcohol, food and lack of sleep. It’s a all combination for the body.
But I like to have my cake and eat it too (excuse the pun).
So what do I do? And how do I avoid the hangover!?
Problem 1. I know the toxic effects that alcohol and lack of sleep has on cortisol. After 2 drinks, cortisol begins to ramp up – completely switching off fat-burning and worse still, it starts storing fat! Add extra calories to that, and you have a weight-gain train wreck. Imagine amplifying the fat-gaining capability of pure sugar – that’s the situation you have.
Solution 1: I take 4 capsules of Rest & Relax or other adaptogen herbs before drinking, and before bed. This keeps a lid on the cortisol, and keeps the inflammation down, not to mention an even better sleep.
Problem 2: Alcohol and party foods. As above, alcohol puts lots of fat on, not only that, it also boosts oestrogen load and lowers testosterone – worse again for weight management. Alcohol also disrupts your gut flora and strips your body of key minerals and vitamins. In fact, hangovers are largely due to poor detoxification, nutrient depletion, dehydration and disruption of the gut bacteria.
Solution 2: Drink Gutright before a big night, and drink it the next day. Combine with an electrolyte mix (honestly a lifesaver this time of year) before and after drinking.
By doing this, I’m negating as best as possible the toxic effects of partying. I’m able to offset a large portion of the damage, and prevent hangovers. If only I knew all of this when I was at Uni!
After all, I want to enjoy the festive season without being a stick in the mud, but I don’t want to blow out or feel like crap as a consequence.
